Ude-hishigi-waki-gatame 腕挫腋固 (Armpit Arm Lock)
Classification: Katame-waza → Kansetsu-waza (Joint Lock Techniques)
Target Joint: Elbow
Type: Straight arm lock (extension)
Description
Ude-hishigi-waki-gatame is a straight arm lock that applies pressure to uke’s elbow using the armpit as a fulcrum. The name means “arm-crushing armpit-hold.” It is often executed quickly during transitions or as a counterattack when uke extends the arm.
How to Apply
- From the right side of uke (who is lying face up or kneeling), grab uke’s right wrist with both hands.
- Pull uke’s arm across your body and trap it under your right armpit.
- Ensure uke’s elbow is aligned against your torso with the forearm pointing forward.
- Apply downward pressure with your upper body by clamping your armpit down and pulling with both hands.
- The arm becomes a lever that hyperextends at the elbow, leading to a controlled submission.
This lock is powerful and can be dangerous if applied too forcefully. Control and gradual pressure are essential for safe practice.
