Ude-hishigi-ude-gatame 腕挫腕固 (Arm Lock)
Classification: Katame-waza → Kansetsu-waza (Joint Lock Techniques)
Target Joint: Elbow
Type: Straight arm lock (extension)
Description
Ude-hishigi-ude-gatame is a direct arm extension lock applied while maintaining top control over uke, often from a pinning position. This technique uses the body as a lever to hyperextend the elbow joint. The name translates as “arm-crushing arm-hold,” referring to how the pressure is applied directly through the upper body and shoulder.
How to Apply
-
From a top position (such as side control or mount):
-
Trap uke’s left wrist and bend their arm so that the elbow is pointed upward, and the forearm lies across your chest or shoulder.
-
Their palm should face outward with the thumb pointing downward.
-
-
Place uke’s elbow joint between your shoulder and neck.
-
With both hands on uke’s wrist or forearm, apply downward pressure while simultaneously raising your shoulder or chest upward into the elbow.
-
This creates a lever that hyperextends the arm, forcing uke to submit.
