Ude-hishigi-juji-gatame 腕挫十字固 (Cross Arm Lock)
Classification: Katame-waza → Kansetsu-waza (Joint Lock Techniques)
Target Joint: Elbow
Type: Straight arm lock (extension)
Description
Ude-hishigi-juji-gatame is one of the most fundamental and widely used armbar submissions in judo. It focuses on hyperextending the elbow joint using the strength of your hips and legs while isolating the opponent’s arm. The name literally means “arm-crushing cross-hold,” referencing the position of your body relative to the opponent’s arm.
How to Apply
-
From the top position or transitioning from a throw or scramble:
-
Control uke’s wrist (usually their right arm) with both hands.
-
Step over and sit beside uke so that uke’s arm is perpendicular across your chest.
-
-
Place uke’s upper arm between your thighs and squeeze your knees together for control.
-
Hook your legs over uke’s body:
-
The leg nearest uke’s head should go over the face or neck.
-
The other leg stays across uke’s torso or hips for stability.
-
-
Pull uke’s thumb up / pinky down to align the elbow joint correctly.
-
Pinch your knees, pull down on the wrist with both hands, and lift your hips to apply pressure on the elbow.
