Ude-hishigi-hara-gatame 腕挫腹固 (Stomach Arm Lock)

Classification: Katame-waza → Kansetsu-waza (Joint Lock Techniques)
Target Joint: Elbow
Type: Straight arm lock (extension)

Description

Ude-hishigi-hara-gatame is a straight arm lock that uses the practitioner’s abdomen or torso to apply pressure against uke’s extended arm. The name translates to “arm-crushing stomach-hold.” It is typically used when uke is in a prone or supine position, and the opportunity arises to isolate an arm directly against the tori’s body.

How to Apply

  1. Approach from uke’s right side, with uke lying face-up.
  2. Secure uke’s right wrist with your right hand.
  3. Position uke’s elbow across your abdomen or midsection.
  4. Use your torso to press against uke’s elbow joint while pulling the wrist toward you.
  5. Lean your upper body forward to create a levering action against uke’s elbow.

This creates an armbar-like effect, hyperextending the elbow and causing immediate pressure. It’s crucial to apply the technique gradually and maintain control throughout to prevent injury.

This technique is included in the Kodokan’s official list of kansetsu-waza and often appears in advanced groundwork transitions.
