Ude-hishigi-ashi-gatame 腕挫脚固 (Leg Arm Lock)
Classification: Katame-waza → Kansetsu-waza (Joint Lock Techniques)
Target Joint: Elbow
Type: Straight arm lock (extension)
Description
Ude-hishigi-ashi-gatame is a straight arm lock executed using the practitioner’s leg to apply pressure against the opponent’s elbow joint. The name translates to “arm-crushing leg-hold.” It typically occurs during ne-waza (groundwork), especially when the opponent exposes their arm during a scramble or turnover attempt.
How to Apply
- Begin with uke lying face-down (prone position).
- Position yourself over uke from the left side.
- Trap uke’s left arm by hooking your left leg around it.
- Control uke’s wrist with one hand while stabilising your position.
- Extend your leg and hip to press against uke’s elbow joint, while simultaneously pulling on the wrist to apply pressure.
This creates a levering action at the elbow joint, leading to hyperextension and forcing uke to submit. This kansetsu-waza is effective when uke attempts to defend against back takes or transitions.
Ude-hishigi-ashi-gatame requires precise timing and body positioning to maintain control and safely apply the joint lock.
