Uchi-makikomi 内巻込

Inner Wraparound Throw

Classification: Sacrifice Technique (Sutemi-waza) – Sideways (Yoko-sutemi)
Category: Makikomi-waza (wraparound throws)

Description
A sacrifice throw executed when tori initiates from an ippon-seoi-nage (one-arm shoulder throw) position. Instead of throwing uke over the shoulder, tori rotates the hips outward and wraps uke’s right arm into the crook of their own elbow. By pulling uke in tightly and using a wide circular motion, tori sacrifices their own balance and falls forward, causing uke to be thrown over in a spiral motion.

This technique requires strong commitment and precise timing to ensure uke’s momentum is controlled and redirected safely and effectively.

Biomechanics of Uchi-makikomi

This technique primarily utilises centrifugal force. As tori rotates forward into the throw, uke is thrown in an arcing motion over tori’s body (C). It is also partially a leverage technique, as tori uses the hooked arm and hip rotation to redirect uke’s momentum and initiate the throw.

Nice to Know

🌀 The word Makikomi (巻込) literally translates to “wrap-in” or “roll together.” It implies engulfing or absorbing the opponent’s movement into your own. In judo, this often means using the opponent’s momentum and body against them by committing your full body to the technique.

🎌 Makikomi-style techniques are particularly useful in Kaeshi-waza (counter throws), where you use your opponent’s failed attack as an opening. Uchi-makikomi is often applied when a seoi-nage fails due to uke resisting or stepping off balance—allowing tori to immediately transition and control the fall.
