Tsurikomi-goshi – 釣込腰 – Lifting and Pulling Hip Throw
Classification: Nage-waza (throwing technique) – Koshi-waza (hip technique)
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ (Intermediate level)
Kodokan-approved technique
Technical Description
Tsurikomi-goshi is a classic hip throw that emphasises the lifting (tsuri) and pulling (komi) action through proper grip and hip positioning. Tori breaks uke’s balance (kuzushi) forward or toward uke’s front-right corner using both the lapel and sleeve grips.
Tori then steps deeply inside, dropping the hips to align with uke’s upper thighs (as opposed to the pelvis in O-goshi). With the hips as a pivot, tori extends the legs and uses both arms to lift and rotate uke over the hip in a smooth circular motion.

Biomechanical Principles of Tsurikomi-goshi
Tsurikomi-goshi works as a rotational lever with three critical components:
-
C – Fulcrum (Pivot Point): Tori places the hips in contact with uke’s upper thighs.
-
F1 and F2 – Force Vectors (Arms): Both arms lift and pull uke across the pivot point.
-
The throw combines vertical lifting and rotational pulling to achieve maximum efficiency.
Did You Know?
This technique has a popular variation known as Sode Tsurikomi Goshi, where tori grips both sleeves instead of the lapel and sleeve. It’s a powerful, competition-effective adaptation of the traditional hip throw.
One of the most famous judoka to use this version is Noël van ’t End, World Champion 2019 (-90kg). He executed this technique multiple times with great success at the highest level.
Pro Tip for Safe Application:
When using the sleeve-sleeve grip, direct your elbow not toward uke’s face, but into their armpit. This reduces the risk of injury and maintains control during the entry and throw.
Additionally, this variation makes the technique easy to practise from both sides and is perfect for dynamic uchi-komi (repetitive entry drills).
