Tori aomuke (取仰向け) – Supine Position with Leg Control

Tori aomuke literally means “tori lying face-up.” In this groundwork scenario, tori lies on their back, typically with uke positioned on top or in close proximity, while maintaining control using the legs.

Position Overview

In this supine position:

  • Tori lies flat on their back (aomuke)

  • The legs are actively engaged to trap or control uke’s hips or upper body

  • Arms are used defensively or to set up attacks

  • The head remains slightly off the mat to allow for movement and awareness

This position is common in modern ne-waza (ground fighting) and is closely related to what is known in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as the guard position.

Tactical Objectives

From aomuke, tori seeks to:

  • Prevent uke from passing the legs or achieving a dominant hold

  • Set up sweeps or turnovers to reverse the position

  • Apply submission techniques, such as strangles (shime-waza) or armlocks (kansetsu-waza)

  • Transition into a controlling top position

Defensive and Offensive Balance

While it may appear vulnerable, this position offers a powerful platform for both defense and counterattack. Skilled tori judoka use hooks, pressure, leverage, and timing to neutralise uke’s control and turn the tide of the exchange.
