Sode-guruma-jime 袖車絞 (Sleeve Wheel Choke)
Classification: Katame-waza → Shime-waza (Strangulation Techniques)
Sode-guruma-jime is a choke where tori uses his own sleeves, not uke’s gi, to create a wheel-like rotation of the arms that applies pressure to both sides of uke’s neck.
How to Apply
-
From a seated position behind uke, place your right forearm across the front of uke’s neck.
-
Place your left forearm against the back of uke’s neck.
-
With your left hand, grab the inside of your right sleeve at the forearm.
-
Insert the edge of your right hand into the right side of uke’s neck.
-
Apply the choke by rotating your forearms inward—like turning a wheel—compressing both sides of uke’s neck simultaneously.
Biomechanics
This is a scissoring arm choke, where the forearms act as opposing force vectors (F1 + F2) against uke’s neck. The sleeve grip provides anchoring (Re), allowing tori to generate strong rotational torque across uke’s neck. The closing pressure mimics the mechanics of a traditional cross-choke but is self-contained, requiring only tori’s own judogi.
