Ryōte-jime 両手絞 (Two-Handed Choke)
Classification: Katame-waza → Shime-waza (Strangulation Techniques)
Ryōte-jime is a strangulation technique that uses both hands simultaneously to apply choking pressure to the sides of uke’s neck using the thumb-in grip on both sides of the collar.
How to Apply
-
Tori is in a face-up (aomuke) position with uke on top or hovering.
-
With the left hand, grip uke’s right collar, and with the right hand, grip uke’s left collar, thumbs inside, palms down.
-
Apply pressure by pulling the collar grips across uke’s neck, forcing the thumb-side of both fists into each side of uke’s neck.
-
Tori can amplify the pressure by using the legs as leverage, for example by placing the soles of the feet against uke’s hips or torso to push and generate counterforce.
Biomechanics
This is a bilateral collar choke, where both hands (F1 + F2) work in opposition to compress both carotid arteries simultaneously. The grips serve as the anchor points (Re), and the closing motion of the arms completes the strangle. Additional torque and pull from the legs can significantly increase choking pressure and speed up uke’s surrender.
