Okuri-eri-jime 送襟絞 (Sliding Collar Choke)

Classification: Katame-waza → Shime-waza (Strangulation Techniques)

Okuri-eri-jime is a classic strangle technique using both collars of uke’s judogi. It is applied from behind and is one of the most effective and iconic chokes in judo, commonly seen in both kata and competition.

How to Apply

  1. From behind uke, reach your right hand around his neck to grip deep into his left collar (revers) near the neck.

  2. With your left hand, reach under uke’s left armpit and grab his right collar (revers) near the chest.

  3. Pull both hands in a scissoring motion, tightening the collar across uke’s neck.

  4. Keep your elbows close and apply pressure by drawing uke slightly backward while keeping your own posture tight.

Biomechanics

This is a compression strangle (Re). The technique applies force to both sides of uke’s neck using the collars of the gi. The pulling motion of both arms creates symmetrical pressure against the carotid arteries. The power of the choke increases with proper wrist rotation and close body contact.
