Katate-jime 片手絞 (One-Hand Choke)
Classification: Katame-waza → Shime-waza (Strangulation Techniques)
Katate-jime is a strangulation technique executed with only one hand. The choke uses the thumb-in grip on one side of uke’s collar (revers) while applying direct pressure to the neck using the sharp edge of the wrist and forearm. No additional grip is used to reinforce the strangulation.
How to Apply
-
Tori controls uke from the side while uke is lying on their back.
-
With the right hand, tori grips deep into uke’s right collar (thumb inside, palm facing down).
-
Using the ridge of the wrist and forearm, tori applies direct pressure to one side of the neck.
-
Tori keeps the weight low and centred to maximise control and prevent escape while executing the choke.
Biomechanics
Katate-jime operates as a single-sided compression choke using the collar as an anchor point (Re). The power comes from the sharp pressure of the wrist/forearm against uke’s carotid artery. Stability is key, so tori must maintain a solid base to make the pressure effective.
