Kataha-jime 片羽絞 (Single Wing Choke)
Classification: Katame-waza → Shime-waza (Strangulation Techniques)
Kataha-jime is a strangulation technique that uses one collar and one arm position to apply strong asymmetric pressure to uke’s neck. It is often used from a back control or turtle position and is known for its strong and fast effect when properly applied.
How to Apply
-
From behind your opponent, reach your right arm around uke’s neck to grip deep into his left collar (revers).
-
Slide your left hand under uke’s left armpit, bringing it around the back of his neck. The back of your left hand rests against uke’s neck.
-
Apply the choke by pulling with the right hand (collar grip) and pushing forward with the left arm. The pressure is created through a twisting, scissoring motion that compresses the neck.
Biomechanics
Kataha-jime is a compression-based shime-waza that uses leverage across the neck (Re). The asymmetrical setup makes it harder to defend than traditional juji-jime. The pushing action from the back of the hand, combined with the pulling collar grip, tightens uke’s gi around the neck—restricting blood flow and forcing a submission.
