06. Kataha-jime 片羽絞

Kataha-jime 片羽絞 (Single Wing Choke)

Classification: Katame-waza → Shime-waza (Strangulation Techniques)

Kataha-jime is a strangulation technique that uses one collar and one arm position to apply strong asymmetric pressure to uke’s neck. It is often used from a back control or turtle position and is known for its strong and fast effect when properly applied.

How to Apply

  1. From behind your opponent, reach your right arm around uke’s neck to grip deep into his left collar (revers).

  2. Slide your left hand under uke’s left armpit, bringing it around the back of his neck. The back of your left hand rests against uke’s neck.

  3. Apply the choke by pulling with the right hand (collar grip) and pushing forward with the left arm. The pressure is created through a twisting, scissoring motion that compresses the neck.

Biomechanics

Kataha-jime is a compression-based shime-waza that uses leverage across the neck (Re). The asymmetrical setup makes it harder to defend than traditional juji-jime. The pushing action from the back of the hand, combined with the pulling collar grip, tightens uke’s gi around the neck—restricting blood flow and forcing a submission.
