03. Kata-juji-jime 片十字絞

Kata-juji-jime 片十字絞 (Half Cross Choke)

Classification: Katame-waza → Shime-waza (Strangulation Techniques)

Kata-juji-jime is a classical collar strangle in judo using an asymmetrical grip—one hand with the thumb inside the lapel, the other with the fingers inside. This combination creates a scissoring motion that compresses both sides of uke’s neck.

How to Apply

  1. From a dominant position, cross your arms over uke’s chest.

  2. With your right hand, insert your thumb inside uke’s right collar (palm facing downward).

  3. With your left hand, insert your fingers inside uke’s left collar (palm facing upward).

  4. Pull with the left hand while applying sharp downward pressure with the right wrist to compress uke’s neck and finish the choke.

Biomechanics

This choke is based on opposing force vectors (F1 + F2). Tori pulls with the fingers-in grip while rotating the forearm with the thumb-in grip to push the edge of the wrist and forearm into uke’s carotid artery. The crossed configuration creates torque and symmetrical neck compression, restricting blood flow efficiently.
