Harai-makikomi 払巻込
Sweeping Hip Wraparound Throw
Classification: Sacrifice Technique (Sutemi-waza) – Side (Yoko-sutemi)
Group: Shinmeisho no Waza (Newly Accepted Techniques by the Kodokan)
Description
Harai-makikomi is a high-commitment follow-up to Harai-goshi (Sweeping Hip Throw). It begins with tori unbalancing uke toward the front or front-right corner—similar to the entry for Harai-goshi. As tori initiates the sweeping hip movement, they release their collar grip and rotate sharply to the left.
Instead of lifting uke cleanly with the hip, tori wraps uke’s right arm deeply under their left armpit, trapping it against their torso. Tori then drives forward, falling into the throw and taking uke down in a spiralling, wrapping motion.
This technique is ideal when uke resists the initial Harai-goshi entry or stiffens up—rather than forcing the throw, tori adapts and converts it into a powerful wraparound motion.

Biomechanics of Harai-makikomi
-
Type: Couple (Re + F3)
-
Force components:
-
Re: Tori pulls uke’s upper body forward and around.
-
F3: Tori uses the sweeping action of their leg to remove uke’s support (just below the knee).
-
-
Key point:
Instead of trying to lift uke over the hip, tori sacrifices balance and falls forward into uke, creating a wrapping momentum that pulls uke into a circular throw. -
Centrifugal force:
As with other makikomi techniques, uke’s body is launched in a boomerang-like path, rotating over and around tori.
Did you know?
The word Makikomi (巻込) literally means “wraparound” or “to roll in.” In Harai-makikomi, the classic sweeping motion of Harai-goshi is preserved, but tori transforms the energy into a sacrifice technique by wrapping uke and falling forward.
This throw is commonly used in high-level judo matches as a backup when uke stiff-arms or blocks Harai-goshi. Because tori lets go of the collar grip, it’s essential to secure uke’s arm tightly to prevent counterattacks.
Like all sutemi-waza, timing and commitment are everything. Once you go, there’s no turning back—but that’s also what makes this throw so powerful.
