Technical Description
Harai-goshi-gaeshi is a counter technique used against harai-goshi (sweeping hip throw). As uke commits to a right-sided harai-goshi, tori anticipates and intercepts the attack.
To execute the counter:
-
Tori uses their left leg to hook uke’s supporting left leg from behind, stopping uke’s rotation and base.
-
At the same time, tori controls uke’s upper body, redirecting the momentum backward and executing a powerful reversal throw.
This throw is particularly effective because it exploits uke’s extended balance and one-legged commitment during their sweeping motion.

Biomechanics of Harai-goshi-gaeshi
This is a couple (F1 + F2) based technique:
-
F1 (upper-body force): Tori manipulates uke’s torso backwards using grips and body rotation.
-
F2 (lower-body force): Tori hooks and sweeps uke’s standing leg (usually the left) in the opposite direction of the original throw.
-
The opposing forces create a rotational imbalance, toppling uke over.
Timing is critical—tori must act just as uke’s balance is broken forward but before the full hip contact is made.
Did You Know?
Harai-goshi-gaeshi (払腰返) is the 10th officially recognized throw in the Kodokan’s Shinmeisho no Waza list of “newly accepted techniques”.
It beautifully reflects the essence of judo:
“Jū yoku gō o seisu” – Softness overcomes hardness.
By yielding and redirecting uke’s attack, tori transforms defence into offence—true judo.
